The birth, death and bodily Resurrection of Jesus who is the only begotten son of God, is the living word of God, who was God and was with God in the beginning. He is also the second person in the godhead by whom everything was made and who now sits at the right hand of god making intercession for us.
Why? To what end and purpose?
Romans 3:23 (KJV) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
And because….
Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord is available to all mankind. We need only believe and confess that we believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God.
John 3:16-18 (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
And why should we want this salvation?
First and foremost, to escape eternal condemnation and damnation in hell which according to the following scriptures is a real place of torments under the earth
Matthew 23:33 (KJV) Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Luke 16:22-23 (KJV)
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Mark 3:29 (KJV) But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
Numbers 16:32-33 (KJV)
32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among i congregation.
Since all have sinned, all are guilty of a debt that can only be remitted or paid by the shedding of blood.
Hebrews 9:22 (KJV) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Jesus Christ, who was without sin, took our place as the sacrificed lamb whose blood paid our debt in full and took away the sins of the world.
John 1:29 (KJV) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Of course, there is much more to be said about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but this received and believed is the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation.
This Old Testament prophesy tells us neatly what the gospel is….
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
That prophesy foretold Christ being made an atonement for our sins and that along with the remission of sins there would also be healing. This is fulfilled in Matthew chapter 8…
Matthew 8:16-17 (KJV) When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
That brings is to the second reason for salvation which is abundant life right here on earth. Eternal life starts the moment you believe and truthfully confess that Jesus Christ is the son of God.
Notice that the fulfillment of the old testament prophesy that foretold our saviour and our salvation included healing along with Christ being bruised for us taking our sins.
Matthew 8 is even more clear about this for it says that the healing that he did was the fulfillment of that prophesy even neatly restating the entire prophesy by simply saying
“Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses”
Reading this in both Isaiah and Matthew we see that salvation and healing are tied tightly together.
Even Jesus himself, when asked if he was the messiah by those men that John the Baptist had sent to him declared to them as proof the healings and the miracles along with the gospel being preached…
Matthew 11:2-6 (KJV)
2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
In one sentence, the Gospel is that Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God took the sins of all the world upon himself and that he was put to death in our place and rose from the dead on the third day. but it is also that he took our sickness. Therefore, as the gospel is the power of God unto salvation by default it is also the power of God unto healing for, according to the above scriptures, healing and salvation are bound together.
Galatians 3:13-14 (KJV)
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Finally, there is no “sinners’ prayer” in the Bible that needs to be recited as a requisite to salvation. You only need to believe and confess that you believe that Jesus Christ is the Christ and the son of the living God. As Simon Peter did here.
Matthew 16:16 (KJV) And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

I recommend that every Christian own and read a good theology textbook such as
“Systematic Theology” by Wayne Grudem ISBN 0851106528
Or my favorite “What the Bible Teaches” by R.A. Torrey
